Patient selection process. Out of the 8715 patients who were admitted to the ICU during the study period, 2009 adult patients were screened for eligibility. After the exclusion of non-AKI patients and those without records of ICU admission serum IL-6 levels, 646 AKI patients were enrolled for the analyses.
