Hypothetical case scenario. We provided primary care physicians with one of four randomly assigned hypothetical scenarios, which varied on patient race (African American or White) and the presence or absence of diabetes. * Complete blood count includes hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet count, and white blood cell count. † For the "4 month ago values", the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) for the White and African American patient was 32 mL/min/1.73m2 and for the "1 week ago" values the eGFR was 28 and 29 mL/min/1.73m2, respectively (using the 4-variable Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study equation)[20].
