New onset hypertension after 20 weeks gestation (defined as two BP readings > 140/90 separated by ≥4 h)

Preeclampsia

Gestational hypertension with dipstick proteinuria ≥1+

Eclampsia

Seizure with preeclampsia

Sepsis

Treating clinician’s judgement

Antepartum haemorrhage

Any documented vaginal bleeding except “spotting”

Postpartum haemorrhage

Any documented bleeding considered by the treating obstetrician not to be physiological

Heart failure

Pre-existing clinical diagnosis
