PAS staining is normal in the 4 week STZ group, while vacuolization of tubular epithelial cells is present at 8 weeks (arrow). By 24 weeks there is widespread tubular epithelial cell necrosis with cellular debris in the tubular lumens (arrows). Panel II: Masson trichrome staining of kidneys at 4, 8 and 24 weeks following STZ treatment. There is no detectable fibrosis at 4 and 8 weeks, while there are small foci of fibrosis (blue staining) in the cortex of kidneys at 24 weeks (inset X400)
