Gene expression of extracellular matrix components and activator-protein 1 components. The mRNA expression of type I (Col1a1) and type III (Col3a1) collagens were significantly elevated in TGF-β1 kidneys (a, b), accompanied by marked TIMP-1 mRNA (Timp1) overexpression (c) with reduced MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratio (d) which were attenuated by pioglitazone.
