Core salivary microbiome with relative abundance > 1% or relative abundance of < 1% while presenting statistically difference in the HD patients or the healthy controls. The core microbiome was defined as species present in 75% or greater of samples. The inner box labeled with 1 indicates the species is more abundant in the healthy controls than in the HD patients. The inner box labeled with 2 indicates the species is more abundant in the HD patients than in the controls. The significance of differences between groups was assessed using Mann-Whitney U-test (*P < 0.05, **P < 0.01, ***P < 0.001)
